FiNo 2026 (Lund): Call for abstracts
We are delighted to announce that the 11th Fonologi i Norden meeting will be hosted by the Centre for Languages and Literature at Lund University, 12th–13th of February 2026.
We invite submissions on any topic in phonology (including work in progress). Abstracts related to the phonology of languages spoken in the Nordic countries are particularly encouraged.
Please submit your abstract as a PDF document to fonologi.i.norden(a)gmail.com<mailto:fonologi.i.norden@gmail.com> by the 9th of November, 2025, 23:59 CET. If you use special characters such as IPA symbols, make sure they are embedded in your PDF.
Submission guidelines:
* One A4 page for the abstract text (references and data visualizations may be placed together on one additional page)
* 12 pt. Times New Roman typeface, single line spacing, and 2.5 cm (1 inch) margins.
* Submission email specifications:

We would like to bring to your attention that the Nordic Speech Research Forum is back after a summer break.
The Nordic Speech Research Forum convenes online to hear about and discuss interesting ongoing work in the broad area of speech research. Invited speakers mainly represent Nordic scholars at different career stages. In 2024, we will convene on varying weekdays and times to test which meeting time would be optimal. The talks (30–40 mins) will be followed by discussion in a relaxed atmosphere.

Tutorial: The ‘problem’ of formant tracking, and how to use fast track.
An overview of key challenges in formant tracking will be presented, followed by an introduction to the Fast Track tool (https://github.com/santiagobarreda/FastTrack) The session includes basic theory, practical examples, and hands-on time for trying out the tool and asking questions.

Talk: A Bayesian Model of Joint Vowel and Speaker Perception.
Researchers often employ normalization algorithms to transform formant representations of vowels into more neatly invariant phonetic representations. Although these models are meant to reflect the perceptual transformations carried out by human listeners, they usually rely on parameters estimated 'offline' using substantial information about the speaker. This makes them fundamentally different from speech perception in which listeners must 'guess' the necessary speaker parameters at the same time as they 'guess' the linguistic content in the signal. I will present a Bayesian model of vowel normalization that simultaneously estimates speaker characteristics and vowel quality/category from individual vowels/syllables. By integrating speech perception and the perception of speaker characteristics from limited evidence, this model offers a better approximation of human speech perception than 'traditional' approaches to normalization. Here's another quick update about FONETIK 2025:
Last chance!
It's still possible to register under the same conditions as mentioned in our previous message (with a chance to get a dinner ticket), but registration will definitely close this Sunday at midnight.
The full program will be published a few days before the conference begins—we’re still finalizing it.
That said, we can already share the start and end times: the program will begin at 14:00 on Wednesday and end by 12:00 (or slightly earlier) on Friday.
The relatively late start on Wednesday should make it easier for participants traveling from Stockholm—you can catch the later (and cheaper) 09:24 train, which should still give you enough time to get from Växjö Central Station to the university campus.
(From the train station, take bus no. 3 to Linnéuniversitetet—a ride of about 10 minutes. More information about the conference venue and directions from the bus stop will be available on the website soon!)

Dear all again,
As not entirely unexpected a couple of last-minute requests for an extension of the deadline reached us yesterday. A longer extension will not be possible, unfortunately, but a closer look at our schedule revealed that at least two more days (+ a night for those who really need it) are possible.
Therefore, it’s still ok to submit contributions, or to update already submitted contributions, via the submission system, until Thursday (24/4) morning 8.00 Swedish time.
It is also still possible to register without contribution, and we will probably extend this deadline even further – stay tuned!
(Note, by the way, that there was a mistake in our last message concerning the deadline mentioned in the subject line; the deadline was, of course, 21/4 and nothing else, now extended until 24/4, 8.00.)
