Dear all,
First of all, a big thank you to everyone who has registered for FONETIK 2025 and/or contributed a submission! We're currently putting together an exciting conference program and proceedings volume, and we’re very much looking forward to seeing everything come to life in just a few weeks.
A quick update:
It is still possible to register for the conference (though submissions are now closed). However, as of today, registration for the conference dinner (Day 2, Thursday) is closed.
We faced some challenges securing a venue for the dinner. Initially, it seemed that our preferred choice – PM & Vänner (yes, the one with the Michelin star!) – was unavailable. But thanks to a slightly lower-than-expected number of participants (which we now view as an opportunity for a cozier yet equally dynamic event), we reached out to the restaurant again with a revised headcount. Good news: it looks like we’ll be able to hold the dinner there after all!
Because of this, we can’t accommodate too many more attendees for the dinner. Therefore, if you register from today onward, you will be placed on a waiting list for the dinner. There’s still a chance we can fit you in, and we’ll contact you directly if a spot becomes available—but no guarantees.
That said, registration still includes access to the following social events:
* Welcome reception with buffet, held at the beautiful Teleborgs Slott – a castle located right on campus! (https://teleborgsslott.com/)
* Lunch on Day 2
If you're still considering joining us, don't wait too long—we'd love to see you there!
Warm regards,
Gilbert, Federica, Nate
Dear all again,
As not entirely unexpected a couple of last-minute requests for an extension of the deadline reached us yesterday. A longer extension will not be possible, unfortunately, but a closer look at our schedule revealed that at least two more days (+ a night for those who really need it) are possible.
Therefore, it’s still ok to submit contributions, or to update already submitted contributions, via the submission system, until Thursday (24/4) morning 8.00 Swedish time.
It is also still possible to register without contribution, and we will probably extend this deadline even further – stay tuned!
(Note, by the way, that there was a mistake in our last message concerning the deadline mentioned in the subject line; the deadline was, of course, 21/4 and nothing else, now extended until 24/4, 8.00.)
Best,
Gilbert, Federica, Nate
Call for papers International Conference on Phonetic Variation: Diversity within and across
Languages (ICPhoV)
The International Conference on Phonetic Variation: Diversity within and across Languages
(ICPhoV) will be held at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Granada (Spain) from Monday
19th until Wednesday 21st January 2026.
This conference will provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of research on
different issues related to phonetic variation within and across languages. The papers presented
at the conference will cover a wide range of topics (e.g., dialectology, cross-linguistic
variation), methodological approaches (e.g., experimental phonetics, theoretical analyses,
interdisciplinary research), and perspectives (e.g., synchronic analyses, language change
through time); this list is by no means exhaustive and other topics, approaches, and perspectives
are welcome, as long as the focus of the study is phonetic variation.
ICPhoV aims to celebrate phonetic diversity. Submissions on under-studied languages or
language varieties are particularly welcome.
Topics include, but are not limited to:
1. Production and perception of phonetic variation
2. Phonetic variation and language contact
3. Sociophonetic variation
4. Regional phonetic variation
5. Prosodic variation
6. Phonetic variation and language change
7. Phonetic variation in second language acquisition
8. Technological and computational approaches to phonetic variation
9. Phonetic variation and speech disorders
10. Cross-linguistic phonetic variation
11. Phonetic variation in child language development
12. Forensic and applied perspectives on phonetic variation
13. Multimodality and phonetic variation
14. Phonetic variation, cultural heritage, and archival research
15. Prosodic variation in media and speech
16. Phonetic variation and psycholinguistics
17. Historical analyses of phonetic variation
Submissions close on Sunday 1st June 2025 at 23:59 Madrid time.
Notification of acceptance will be sent in late July 2025.
Plenary speakers:
Paul Boersma, University of Amsterdam.
Ghada Khattab, Newcastle University.

Dear all!
It’s been some time since our last message, but, well, there wasn’t so much to say. However, spring seems to be on its way (at least in the southern parts of Sweden), and FONETIK 2025 is approaching, too – it’s in fact happening next month!
Now, we do have some updates & reminders:
First, the deadline for registration and submission of papers or abstracts is approaching (April 21), and we would like to stress that this deadline needs to be strict; we already tried our best to schedule it as late as possible. However, we’ll need a few weeks for putting together the program and producing the proceedings volume.
**
Second, here are a few updates concerning the program:
This year’s FONETIK conference will highlight a special topic – (embodied) pronunciation training – through a series of events:
1. Invited Talk – Dr. Florence Baills (University of Lleida):
"Embodied Pronunciation Training: Achievements and Challenges"
2. Lab Demonstration – LiLa (Linnaeus University Language, Cognition, and Culture Lab):
PhD student Federica Raschellà presents her ongoing experiment on embodied training for the Swedish length contrast.
3. Pre-Conference Event (May 20, 13.15-15.00, Fe3016) – Talk by Bosse Thorén (in Swedish): "Fonetik och fonologi i andraspråksdidaktiskt perspektiv – vilka uttalsdrag och vilken abstraktionsnivå ska pedagogen ta fasta på?
*
Another update:
Those who have attended previous conferences will experience a few slight modifications when it comes to social events and meals provided by the conference: There will be, as usual, a reception on Wednesday evening – held at Teleborgs Castle (https://teleborgsslott.com/) Unlike previous conferences, on the one hand, access to (free) drinks will have to be more restricted, but a buffet will be served (for free) and the bar will be open (for own purchases over and above the first glass)! On the other hand, on Thursday, lunch will be served for all participants for free, and – as usual - there will be a conference dinner.
Looking very much forward to seeing you all in May!
The organizing committee,
Gilbert, Federica, Nate

Dear pre-registered, yet to be pre-registered, and others interested in the upcoming Fonetik 2025 conference!
It was about time, wasn’t it?
We now finally have a (still slightly rudimentary) conference website:
https://lnu.se/en/meet-linnaeus-university/current/events/2025/konferenser/…
More information will be added eventually, but at least it provides paper and abstract templates, accommodation information and a little more already.

Welcome to FONETIK 2025 – Växjö – May 21–23, 2025: Please pre-register now!
It’s (still) about time, isn’t it?
Dear all,
This is a gentle, two-fold reminder:
1. First, for us, the organizing committee, to set-up a conference website, and provide a paper template and other relevant information!
2. Second, for all who are likely to attend, with or without a contribution, to pre-register! If possible, until February 14, 2025 (because our first love will always be phonetics…)
As we haven’t provided any information whatsoever on how to pre-register, and the website is apparently not available yet, we now kindly ask you pre-register by writing to this e-mail: Gilbert.Ambrazaitis(a)lnu.se<mailto:Gilbert.Ambrazaitis@lnu.se>
The conference website is ordered and will hopefully be available very soon. We will send out a new, short notice, when this is the case.
You might also want to start planning potential paper/abstract contributions.
Themes and submissions
The conference covers any aspect of phonetics and speech science. Scientific areas include, but are not limited to: phonetics, phonology, linguistics, computational linguistics, gesture studies, speech and language pathology, pronunciation teaching, voice research, music and singing, conversation analysis, psychology, cognitive science, speech and language technology, signal processing, machine learning...
Submissions by junior researchers, bachelor or master students, and/or researchers who have not yet been introduced to the FONETIK meeting are strongly encouraged!
Two types of submissions are possible: Abstract-only submissions (300 words) and papers (up to 6 pages). As usual, there will be no peer review (enabling a rather late submission deadline), although we will request revisions of formal issues in case of significant deviations from the template.
Important dates (again):
* Pre-register for the conference: February 14, 2025 (Because our first love will always be phonetics)
* Final registration and submission deadline (300-word abstract or 6-page paper): April 21, 2025 (Easter Monday)
We look forward to seeing you in May!

Hej fonetiker,

etc...
Varma hälsningar,
Susanne
