Dear all,
There is no IMS seminar on Wednesday, 23 September; instead, we want to draw your attention to three events organized in collaboration between LNUC IMS, LNUC Concurrences, and The Cultural University, connected to Napoleon Maddox's residency in the Linnaeus Residency Programme 2026.
Napoleon Maddox is a writer, musician, visual artist, and educator whose work bridges historical documentation and contemporary social engagement. His practice often combines archival research, oral histories, and community-based processes to illuminate marginalized narratives and reframe historical memory through sound, text, and visual art. His early work A Riot Named Nina (2009), developed in the suburban areas of France, explored the repertoire of Nina Simone alongside the social conditions of the Parisian banlieues. In 2017, Maddox premiered the multimedia production Twice the First Time, which unfolded the life story of conjoined twins Millie-Christine McCoy, born into slavery in 1851, through document analysis and collected oral histories. A similar research-driven approach informed his recent production and painting series L’Ouverture de Toussaint (2021–2023), inspired by the life and legacy of Toussaint Louverture, leader of the Haitian Revolution.

Källa / Source – Nature Resists (exhibition opening)
Thursday, 24 September, 12.15
University Library, Växjö Campus
Opening of the exhibition Källa/Source – Nature Resists by Napoleon Maddox, Artist in Residence in the Linnaeus Residency Programme 2026.
In a world where injustice has become normalized, nature takes its revenge. In Källa/Source, Napoleon Maddox intertwines stories of enslavement, revolt, resilience, and hope with contemporary issues of racism, marginalization, and the power of nature. Through collage, text, photography, and glass, resistance emerges in many forms - both human and more-than-human. Nature emerges as an active force, responding to a world in which injustice has been normalized and presented as the natural order of things.
The exhibition presents concepts and paintings by Napoleon Maddox, photographs by Sabine Buri, and objects created in collaboration with glass artist Josefin Bravo. The opening event will feature a performance by artist Saba Tadele, followed by a presentation of the artworks and the collaboration by the artist and research leader Liv Nilsson Stutz.

Sorg & Napoleon Maddox present the album "1968"
Friday, 25 September, doors 18.30, start 19.00
MONO, Sandgärdsgatan 1, Växjö
A performance by Sorg and Maddox centred on their new album, titled 1968.
So many things emerged or came into the light in 1968. Not only the student-led social movements in France, there were also tragedies that united the masses. For example in 1968, there was the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, which led to a larger increase in the membership and support for the Black Panthers across the United States. There were also major organised actions in protest against the war in Vietnam, and other uprisings in Egypt, Japan and across Europe, including the May 3rd and May 24 actions in Sweden.
In the album ‘1968', Sorg & Maddox compare and contrast between the times we are facing, and the lessons we can take from the past. They protest the lies and genocides of today, remembering the war in Vietnam, and the mass protest movements for Peace. But they also celebrate the resilience and ingenuity of the people.
Sorg & Maddox don't pretend to resolve the crises and suffering of 2026 or 2027. The statement that resonates across the album, is that we have to look honestly at who we are, and see that we have to build today for a better tomorrow. It's the only way forward.
