Invitation: Workshop & Talk with Santiago Barreda (UC Davis) at Stockholm University – May 27

As part of his visit, we are pleased to invite you to a half-day workshop on Tuesday, May 27, featuring a research talk and a hands-on tutorial on formant tracking, please see schedule below. Date: Tuesday, May 27 Location: room D365, Södra Huset D, Frescati 13.30-14.30 Tutorial: The ‘problem’ of formant tracking, and how to use fast track. An overview of key challenges in formant tracking will be presented, followed by an introduction to the Fast Track tool (https://github.com/santiagobarreda/FastTrack) The session includes basic theory, practical examples, and hands-on time for trying out the tool and asking questions. 15.00-16.30 Talk: A Bayesian Model of Joint Vowel and Speaker Perception. Researchers often employ normalization algorithms to transform formant representations of vowels into more neatly invariant phonetic representations. Although these models are meant to reflect the perceptual transformations carried out by human listeners, they usually rely on parameters estimated 'offline' using substantial information about the speaker. This makes them fundamentally different from speech perception in which listeners must 'guess' the necessary speaker parameters at the same time as they 'guess' the linguistic content in the signal. I will present a Bayesian model of vowel normalization that simultaneously estimates speaker characteristics and vowel quality/category from individual vowels/syllables. By integrating speech perception and the perception of speaker characteristics from limited evidence, this model offers a better approximation of human speech perception than 'traditional' approaches to normalization. FONETIK 2025 Update: When Does the Conference Begin and End?

Hi all! Here's another quick update about FONETIK 2025: Last chance! It's still possible to register under the same conditions as mentioned in our previous message (with a chance to get a dinner ticket), but registration will definitely close this Sunday at midnight. The full program will be published a few days before the conference begins—we’re still finalizing it. That said, we can already share the start and end times: the program will begin at 14:00 on Wednesday and end by 12:00 (or slightly earlier) on Friday. The relatively late start on Wednesday should make it easier for participants traveling from Stockholm—you can catch the later (and cheaper) 09:24 train, which should still give you enough time to get from Växjö Central Station to the university campus. (From the train station, take bus no. 3 to Linnéuniversitetet—a ride of about 10 minutes. FONETIK 2025: registration still possible & some updates

Dear all, First of all, a big thank you to everyone who has registered for FONETIK 2025 and/or contributed a submission! We're currently putting together an exciting conference program and proceedings volume, and we’re very much looking forward to seeing everything come to life in just a few weeks. A quick update: It is still possible to register for the conference (though submissions are now closed). However, as of today, registration for the conference dinner (Day 2, Thursday) is closed. We faced some challenges securing a venue for the dinner. Initially, it seemed that our preferred choice – PM & Vänner (yes, the one with the Michelin star!) – was unavailable. But thanks to a slightly lower-than-expected number of participants (which we now view as an opportunity for a cozier yet equally dynamic event), we reached out to the restaurant again with a revised headcount. Good news: it looks like we’ll be able to hold the dinner there after all! Because of this, we can’t accommodate too many more attendees for the dinner. Therefore, if you register from today onward, you will be placed on a waiting list for the dinner. There’s still a chance we can fit you in, and we’ll contact you directly if a spot becomes available—but no guarantees. FONETIK 2025: Ok, there's a (slight) extension of the submission deadline (+ new deadline for registration without contribution t.b.a.)

Dear all again, As not entirely unexpected a couple of last-minute requests for an extension of the deadline reached us yesterday. A longer extension will not be possible, unfortunately, but a closer look at our schedule revealed that at least two more days (+ a night for those who really need it) are possible. Therefore, it’s still ok to submit contributions, or to update already submitted contributions, via the submission system, until Thursday (24/4) morning 8.00 Swedish time. It is also still possible to register without contribution, and we will probably extend this deadline even further – stay tuned! (Note, by the way, that there was a mistake in our last message concerning the deadline mentioned in the subject line; the deadline was, of course, 21/4 and nothing else, now extended until 24/4, 8.00.) Call for papers International Conference on Phonetic Variation: Diversity within and across Languages (ICPhoV) The International Conference on Phonetic Variation: Diversity within and across Languages (ICPhoV) will be held at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Granada (Spain) from Monday 19th until Wednesday 21st January 2026. This conference will provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of research on different issues related to phonetic variation within and across languages. Dear all! It’s been some time since our last message, but, well, there wasn’t so much to say. However, spring seems to be on its way (at least in the southern parts of Sweden), and FONETIK 2025 is approaching, too – it’s in fact happening next month! Now, we do have some updates & reminders: First, the deadline for registration and submission of papers or abstracts is approaching (April 21), and we would like to stress that this deadline needs to be strict; we already tried our best to schedule it as late as possible. First, for us, the organizing committee, to set-up a conference website, and provide a paper template and other relevant information! 2. Second, for all who are likely to attend, with or without a contribution, to pre-register! If possible, until February 14, 2025 (because our first love will always be phonetics…) As we haven’t provided any information whatsoever on how to pre-register, and the website is apparently not available yet, we now kindly ask you pre-register by writing to this e-mail: Gilbert.Ambrazaitis(a)lnu.se<mailto:Gilbert.Ambrazaitis@lnu.se> The conference website is ordered and will hopefully be available very soon. We will send out a new, short notice, when this is the case. You might also want to start planning potential paper/abstract contributions. Themes and submissions The conference covers any aspect of phonetics and speech science. Scientific areas include, but are not limited to: phonetics, phonology, linguistics, computational linguistics, gesture studies, speech and language pathology, pronunciation teaching, voice research, music and singing, conversation analysis, psychology, cognitive science, speech and language technology, signal processing, machine learning... Submissions by junior researchers, bachelor or master students, and/or researchers who have not yet been introduced to the FONETIK meeting are strongly encouraged! Welcome to FONETIK 2025 – Växjö – May 21–23, 2025! It’s about time, isn’t it? Time, as we all know, is a central dimension in spoken language production and perception—and it is also crucial when planning a conference. After careful consideration, we are thrilled to announce the dates for FONETIK 2025: May 21–23, 2025. This year’s conference will take place earlier than usual, and we hope the timing works well for everyone. So it is high time to announce FONETIK 2025! It is also time to broaden the geographical scope of phonetic research in Sweden. We are excited to host FONETIK in one of Sweden’s most challenging cities to pronounce: Växjö! Might it also be time to put Växjö on the phonetic map of Sweden? At Linnaeus University, phonetic research is based in the Department of Swedish, primarily through LiLa Lab (the Linnaeus University Language Processing Lab), which was founded in 2019. As of late, a vibrant group of phoneticians has started toassemble here, and we are excited to welcome you into this fold. We, the phoneticians at Linnaeus University, invite you to join us for the 35th annual FONETIK conference, which will be held at the university campus May 21–23, in a lunch-to-lunch format. As in previous years, including last year’s event in Stockholm, FONETIK 2025 will be an in-person meeting only, with no hybrid option. Sharing: Invitation to participate in the experiment “Vad säger rösten om talaren? – Ett perceptionstest” You are being invited to participate in an experiment, part of a study on how listeners perceive a character’s physical, social, and psychological features based on their vocal characteristics. This is a listening experiment. To participate, you must be a native Swedish speaker, between 20 and 50 years old. The experiment is online, in Swedish, and takes around 20 minutes to complete. You will be asked to give some background information on yourself to help analyse the data we collect. That information will not be shared with outside parties, and all the data collected will be anonymized. There is no compensation for participating in this study. However, your participation will be a valuable addition to our research on voice and its role in media and social interaction. If you are interested in taking part in the experiment, you can access it at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/vo_se, where you will find additional information and instructions. The conference will be held at Stockholm University Albano Campus June 3–5, 2024, and include a special seminar to celebrate the 90th birthday of Professor Björn Lindblom. Seminar to celebrate Björn Lingblom's 90th birthday As this iteration of the conference coincides with the 90th birthday of Professor emeritus Björn Lindblom, we will also organize a special afternoon seminar to celebrate! Björn is the former head of the Stockholm University Department of Linguistics and founder of the Phonetics Laboratory. He has served as tutor, colleague, advisor, and friend to generations of phonetics students. We encourage presenters to submit contributions toward this special seminar on themes pertinent to central themes of Björn’s research. These topics include speech production, coarticulation, phonological development, evolution of speech, phonetic systems, and phonological universals – and many others. These contributions will be included as part of the general conference proceedings. Language for presentation The contributions at Fonetik deal with Swedish, Nordic and other languages, and the meeting is often visited by researchers from neighbouring countries and occasionally by more long-distance participants. The language for presentations and plenary discussions has been English since the mid-10s, which provides better opportunities for both visitors and doctoral students from other language environments to participate. Social events Conference participants are invited to a reception on Monday evening, June 3rd, at the conference site, and to a dinner on Tuesday evening, close to the campus area. The NNL2P Conference brings together researchers and teachers in second and foreign language pronunciation. The Nordic Network for L2 Pronunciation (NNL2P) takes a special interest in studies of L2 pronunciation specific to Nordic languages as well as general L2 research topics exemplified with Nordic language materials. 3-dages kursus i retslingvistik på Copenhagen Summer University

Jeg tillader mig på opfordring fra en kollega at sende information til jer om et kursus i retslingvistik (forensic linguistics) som jeg afholder for tredje gang i år på Copenhagen Summer University (en enhed under Københavns Universitet som udbyder korte efteruddannelseskurser). I år afholdes kurset d. 14.-16. august, og deltagelse koster 14.500 danske kroner. Undervisningssproget er dansk, men jeg tilpasser naturligvis mit danske så det er til at følge med for nordiske kolleger. Sidste år deltog en gruppe svenske kolleger som gerne vil udbyde retslingvistik på deres hjemuniversitet, og det var en stor fornøjelse at have dem med! Undersökning om f0 i svenska dialekter

Hej! Jag skriver just nu min C-uppsats i nordiska språk vid Uppsala universitet. Uppsatsen handlar om tonhöjdsförändringar vid dialektimitation, det vill säga hur den genomsnittliga grundtonsfrekvensen förändras när informanter härmar olika svenska dialekter. Mitt resultat visar att det finns en tydlig trend bland informanterna att, för vissa dialekter, höja rösten mycket och för andra endast höja rösten litet eller till och med sänka den. För min diskussion har jag varit på jakt efter information om hur det ser ut i de faktiska dialekterna för att kunna avgöra om det rör sig om imitation av ett verkligt fenomen eller endast stereotyper. Jag har fått höra av bland andra Anders Eriksson att Claes-Christian Elert skall ha skrivit om grundton i svenska dialekter men har inte kunnat hitta någon utgiven information om detta. Det var även Anders som hänvisade mig till den här mejlinglistan. Min fråga är därför om någon av er känner till någon tillgänglig källa som diskuterar detta ämne, till exempel någon utgivning av Elert. Invitation to The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences' symposium on the early history of Experimental Phonetics

The Class for humanities and for outstanding services to science in collaboration with the Center for History of Science at The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences will host on the 25th May a Science History symposium to highlight the interdisciplinary character of Experimental Phonetics’ history. The symposium will follow the humanist Armando de Lacerda’s (1902 – 1984) early work on Experimental Phonetics and the general scientific and cultural context in which it emerged, including Phonetics and Natural Sciences interactions from the late 1800s and up to about mid-1900s. Inbjudan till symposium och boksläpp om "Armando de Lacerda: A pioneer of Experimental Phonetics" (KVA, torsdagen den 25 maj)

Hej fonetiker! Klassen för humaniora och för framstående förtjänst om vetenskap (Klass X) tillsammans med Centrum för vetenskapshistoria (CVH) vid Kungliga Vetenskapsakademien bjuder den 25 maj 2023 på ett och ett endagssymposium i Beijersalen på KVA för att samtala om den experimentella fonetikens tidiga historia. Symposiet utgår från den portugisiske filologen och fonetikern Armando de Lacerdas arbete som utgör ett belysande exempel på framgångsrik integration av humanistiska och naturvetenskapliga angreppsätt sedan 1800-talet, vilket kan även inspirera till modern tvärvetenskaplig och problem-baserad forskning. Fonetiker, lingvister och vetenskapshistoriker med olika inriktningar deltar i symposiet förväntas föra en allmänt vetenskapligt och kulturellt diskussion med fonetiska-historiska perspektiv av intresse för såväl akademiker som för en allmän publik och gymnasister. Armando de Lacerda var en portugisisk filolog som vidareutbildade sig till experimentell fonetiker och på 1930-talet lyckades bygga ett av världens modernaste fonetiklaboratorier vid universitetet i Coimbra, Portugal. Armando de Lacerda och fonetiklaboratoriet i Coimbra var välkända och respekterade under fonetiklaboratoriets drygt 40 år av verksamhet, från 1936 till 1979. Tyvärr glömdes Armando de Lacerdas arbete och innovativa instrumentella lösningar därefter bort tills hans bidrag nyligen återupptäcktes och synliggjordes av en portugisisk vetenskapshistoriker (Quintino Lopes). Det är detta nyupptäckta vetenskapshistoriska perspektiv som nu erbjuder en röd tråd om detta tidiga produktiva samspel mellan humaniora och naturvetenskap och som kan vara en förebild för dagens forskare och studenter. Genom att följa Armando de Lacerdas arbete i dess historiska och vetenskapliga kontext hoppas Klass X och CVH kunna ge symposiets deltagare en inblick i det fascinerande vetenskapliga och kulturella landskap som under 1800-talet och tidiga 1900-talet föregick etableringen av experimentella metoder vid undersökningar av humanistiska frågeställningar. Guest teacher at the University of Eastern Finland (Phonetics)

Dear colleagues, I'm searching for a guest teacher for a basic course in phonetics, incl. an introduction to the Praat tool, at the University of Eastern Finland during two weeks in October 2023. The course is part of the program "European Master's in Clinical Linguistics" (https://emcl.eu/) which is a research-oriented program at three European universities. The course has about 25 participants and includes 16 teaching hours in class. It should be practically oriented, rather than theoretical. As a compensation I can offer a so-called Erasmus Mundus scholar grant of € 3900 (gross). Feel free to also inform your BA graduates about our program. Interestingly, we receive applications from all over Europe (and event he World), except the Nordic countries. Nordic Prosody

Den nordiska prosodikonferensen, Nordic Prosody, som hålls vart fjärde år skulle enligt planen hållits 2020. Närmast föregående möte ägde rum i Trondheim 2016. Så blev det nu inte för Nordic Prosody drabbades på det mest olyckliga vis av pandemin. Men nu är den äntligen tillbaka den 17-19 augusti i Sønderborg, Danmark. Det har annonserats lite här och var men för er som missat det kommer här den information ni behöver. Det är viktigt att hålla denna tradition vid liv.
