Dear SI-PASS coördinator,
Does SI-PASS really work? Is it cost-effective? These are questions you might often answer as a SI-PASS coordinator. Until now these questions have been studied with quasi-experiments in which students who participate in SI-PASS are compared to students who do not participate.
Sceptics might then ask if this is not a wrong comparison. Even if you control for previous performance or motivation, there might be differences between these two types of students that you are not taking into account. This is known as 'self-selection bias'.
This month a study was published in Learning and Instruction which access to SI-PASS was randomized in a large-scale field experiment in The Netherlands. The article is freely available and shows that SI-PASS significantly improves grades even with moderate attendance. The study also shows that the intervention is cost-effective and that its effects can be considered large when the costs and scalability are taken into account.
Please feel free to share and use this publication to inform people about SI-PASS:

Hi,
This spring, the European Centre for SI-PASS hosted two online fikas, where SI-PASS/PAL leaders had a chance to come together and share both best practice and challenges. Both fikas were a success and the participating leaders were very engaged and willing to share their thoughts and ideas. During the second fika, the participants were asked to create some concrete output responding to a specific challenge that leaders might face. Two products were created: A template for planning sessions when you are unsure of the number of participants, and a list of ideas for boosting attendance. Both can be found in the attached documents. Please share them with your community of leaders and supervisor as ideas of best practice! Thank you so much to the attending leaders who put together this material!
We are also pleased to announce the dates for online fikas for SI-PASS/PAL leaders during the autumn semester:
Wednesday October 18th 2 pm GMT/3 pm CET
Thursday November 16th 2 pm GMT/3 pm CET
Tuesday December 5th 2 pm GMT/3 pm CET
SI-PASS online leader fika focuses on leader development. It is a chance for SI-PASS leaders to meet in an informal setting online to exchange ideas and experiences; share their best practice and
challenges with a wide network of SI-PASS leaders across Europe.
More information and link for registration will be sent out at the end of the summer, so that you can share the invitation with your leaders during leader training.
Wishing you all a lovely summer!
Kind regards,

Hi All,
Great talking to you all at the fika this afternoon. In our group we discussed a skills assessment that we ask our Leaders to complete just after training, after semester one and at the end of the year to score their perceived skills in certain areas so we can track their improvement. Some people requested I send the questionnaire, we do this through Qualtrix so I can't share the actual questionnaire but I have pasted the questions below for anyone who would be interested.
We also do a more general feedback questionnaire with Leaders at the end of the year, partly for positive feedback to help justify our continued funding but also to find ways that we can improve the experience for Leaders going forward. We ask for the Leaders' names for the skills survey as we need to be able to track their progress, but the general feedback survey is anonymous so Leaders feel free to be honest with their answers. I have included these questions too in case they are of interest.
For context we pay our Leaders for their time so we ask them to complete these surveys as part of a debrief so we have no problem getting the responses.
Hope this is useful!
Many thanks,
Amy

Dear all,
I am pleased to announce that a post-pandemic edition of a report summarizing European SI/PASS/PAL programmes now is available. Thank you so much to all that contributed to this revised report! I have attached the new version of the report. It will be updated continuously when new information is available on the European Centre for SI-PASS web-site: SI-PASS in Europe | European Centre for SI-PASS (lu.se)<https://www.si-pass.lu.se/en/about-si-pass/si-pass-europe> . The report has also been published on ResearchGate if you want a more stable link: DOI: 10.13140/RG.2.2.18513.30564<http://dx.doi.org/10.13140/RG.2.2.18513.30564>
Some pieces of info from the report:
* Based on contributions from SI/PASS/PAL supervisors at 74 Universities and one High School in Europe.
* Estimated that 88 HEIs and two High Schools have active SI/PASS/PAL programmes (the High School number is probably higher)
* At present, there are eleven countries in Europe (mostly in the north-western part) with SI/PASS/PAL schemes.
Based on the collected info, we can make the following estimates (based on the estimate with 90 active SI/PASS/PAL programmes):
· there are ~384 trained supervisors actively involved in the SI/PASS/PAL programmes,
· approximately 7,400 SI/PASS/PAL-leaders are employed each year,
· on average the leaders hold about 15 sessions during an academic year being 0,5-3 hours in length,
· there are ~2,285 courses supported by SI/PASS/PAL each year,
· the number of students having access to SI/PASS/PAL per year is ~132,000,
· the number of students attending at least one time per year is ~67,900 (51 % of those having access),
· the average attendance[1] on SI/PASS/PAL sessions is ~31 %,
· the average number of students at a session is ~11,
· the number of contact hours is ~730,000 during an academic year. (Contact hours are the total number of hours students visit sessions during a year).
Compared to the previous edition of the Status report for European SI-PASS programmes published in 2018, the number of active programmes has increased (from 75 to 90) and new countries like Belgium, Netherlands and Northern Cyprus / Turkey have been welcomed to the European SI-PASS community. Besides adding new programmes over the last five years, there are also a few that ceased to operate. The Corona pandemic in 2020-2022 was a challenge for SI-PASS programmes and it seems like recruitment of leaders and attendance at sessions generally suffered a bit as a result both in the pandemic years but also afterwards. It will be interesting to observe if recruitment of leaders and attendance at sessions improves in the coming years.
