The Less Selfish Gene: Forest Altruism, Neoliberalism, and the Tree of Life
with Rob Nixon

Why have millions of readers and viewers become magnetized by the hitherto arcane field of plant communication? Since the great recession of 2008, we have witnessed an upsurge in public science writing that has popularized research into forest sentience, forest suffering and the forest as collective intelligence. This talk roots the current appeal of forest communication in a widespread discontent with neoliberalism’s antipathy to cooperative ways of being. Nixon argues that the science of forest dynamics offers a counter-narrative of flourishing, an allegory for what George Monbiot has called “private sufficiency and public wealth.
Rob Nixon is the Barron Family Professor in Environment and Humanities at Princeton University. His books include, most recently, Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor. Nixon is currently completing a book entitled Blood at the Root. Environmental Martyrs and the Defense of Life. Nixon writes frequently for the New York Times. His writing has also appeared in The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, The Guardian, The Nation, London Review of Books, The Village Voice, Aeon, Orion, Critical Inquiry and elsewhere. Environmental justice struggles in the global South are central to Nixon’s work. He is a particularly fascinated by the animating role that artists can play in relation to social movements.
The lecture consists of a key note talk followed by a Q&A session, where the zoom audience will get a chance to ask questions to Rob Nixon.

Call for papers
In Nicomachean Ethics and Politics, Aristotle conceived ethics and politics to be both interrelated and exclusively male endeavors. This notion continued to be influential in the early modern period (c.1500–1800). Yet in recent decades, feminist scholarship has showed that throughout the early modern world numerous women nonetheless discussed, developed, and chal- lenged politics and ethics in profound and often surprising ways.
The conference Early Modern Women on Politics and Ethics is organized by the Early Modern Seminar and the research network Philosophy in Other Words, at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. It is dedicated to early modern women’s engagement with politics and ethics as philosophers, authors, critics, translators, editors, artists, patrons, salonnières, pamphleteers, political agents, letter writers, etcetera.
Multidisciplinary in scope, the conference will bring together scholars working in various scientific fields. We especially wel- come contributions that concern underexplored geographical contexts, languages, and traditions.
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to
* Marginalized voices in politics and ethics
* Genres of political and ethical writing
* Representations of political and moral authority
* Subversive political and ethical thought
* Global perspectives on politics and ethics
* Public and private agency
* Material aspects of politics and ethics

16-18 juni 2023 anordnas Svenska historikermötet vid Umeå universitet. Konferensen har denna gång inget specifikt tema utan vill vara en mötesplats för alla slags historiker från skilda discipliner och fält. Även idéhistoriker är varmt välkomna!
Lärdomshistoriska samfundet och redaktionen för Lychnos har under innevarande treårsperiod också sitt säte i Umeå. I väntan på vår egen specifika idéhistoriska konferens På gång, som nästa gång anordnas april 2024, vill vi gärna uppmuntra idéhistoriker att delta i Svenska historikermötet som därmed kan fungera som en spännande mötesplats också för idéhistoria.
