Short Years, Long Years, and Round Years: Anniversaries in the History of Science The 9th Norwegian Conference on the History of science
Deadline for submitting abstracts is extended to June 15.
We invite papers on any aspect of the history of science, technology or medicine and particularly welcome papers engaging with the issue of anniversaries, broadly defined.
The conference program will include a panel and plenary lectures by two invited speakers. Professor Carsten Reinhardt from the University of Bielefeld will hold a keynote address entitled "A Strained Legacy: The Max Planck Society, 1911 -- 1948 -- 2023" discussing the Society's 2023 anniversary publication. Associate Professor Magnus Vollset from the University of Bergen will give the opening lecture on the 150th anniversary of Georg Armauer Hansen's discovery of the leprosy bacillus (a public lecture open to all).
In addition to the two keynote speakers, there will be a plenary panel discussion on the possibilities and challenges associated with anniversary histories, featuring five Norwegian researchers who have contributed to anniversary works for NTNU, the University of Oslo, OsloMet and the University of Bergen: Thomas Brandt (NTNU), Kim Helsvig and Jan Messel (both OsloMet), Astri Andresen and Kari Tove Elvbakken (both UiB).
Participants are invited to take part in our excursion to the Løkken mine and museum. Operating from 1654 to 1987, the Løkken mine primary produced copper during its first 250 years and later also sulphur, zinc and silver. The excursion includes carriages from Norway's first electric railway (opened in 1908) used to transport ore from the mine to the harbour at Thamshavn.

• Bokrecensioner bör inte överstiga 6 000 tecken inklusive huvud och blanksteg.
• Inled med ett recensionshuvud enligt följande:
Förnamn Efternamn: Titel utan stora bokstäver annat än för att följa språkliga regler. Undertitel. Förlagsort: Förlag, utgivningsår. x+n s. ISBN XXX-XXX-XXX-XXX-X [3+3+3+3+1], inb./hft. [inbunden resp. häftad].
• Sidnumrera dokumentet.
• Sidhänvisningar till den recenserade boken anges med sidnummer inom parenteser (utan ”s.” eller ”sid.” innan). Exempel:
Johanna Johansson återger förvisso de argument som framfördes av klubbens ledning (44–45), men hon ger ännu mer utrymme till deras kritiker (45–49).
• Om du refererar till andra verk än det som huvudsakligen diskuteras, ge hela referensen direkt i löptexten. Väv in författarens namn och publikationens titel (samt eventuell undertitel, då åtskild med punkt) i texten; ange utgivningsort, utgivningsår och eventuell sidhänvisning (efter kommatecken) inom parenteser.
Exempel: Som Johanna Johansson skrev i sin banbrytande avhandling December igen. Tankar inför ett nytt år (Stockholm 1944, 33): ”Stockholm är i sanning Skandinaviens huvudstad, eller i alla fall en av dess huvudstäder.”
• Använd inte fot- och slutnoter. Ge plats åt vad du vill säga i texten.
• Dokumentet namnges enligt mallen: ditt efternamn + understreck + bokförfattarens namn (exempel: ”Drakman_Holmqvist.docx”).

Torsdagen den 25 maj bjuder KVA:s Klass för humaniora och Centrum för vetenskapshistoria till ett seminarium om experimentalfonetikens tidiga historia, från mitten på 1800-talet och c:a 100 år framåt. Det blir särskilt fokus på Armando de Lacerdas arbete och symposiet avslutas med boksläpp av "The global periphery:Armando de Lacerda and the Coimbra Experimental Phonetics Laboratory (1936-1979)", av vetenskspshistoriken Quintino Lopes, University Évora, Portugal.

Histories of Scientific Racism, 7.5 credits
Advanced course offered by the Department of History of Science and Ideas, Uppsala University, Autumn 2023 (period 1)

This advanced course, open to students at the master’s or doctoral level, examines the historical development of scientific racism from the 18th century to the first half of the 20th century. The overarching purpose is to investigate how the ideas and practices of scientific racism have been constructed and developed over time, both in relation to the more general history of science, and to social processes of profound importance to the history of scientific racism, including colonialism and imperialism, the institutionalisation and abolishment of slavery, secularisation and the enlightenment, nationalism and democratisation.
The expression “scientific racism” is not limited, in this context, to race biology, but is used more broadly to denote attempts at applying scientific methods to divide humankind into distinct groups, and to decide the characteristics of those groups in relation to one another. The course is chronologically and thematically organised into a series of modules, which range from the emergence of the concept of race within 18th-century natural history, to the enactment of race in early 20th-century genetics and eugenics. Particular emphasis is afforded to the early history of scientific racism, the religious legacy, and the interplay between different fields of enquiry, including natural history and biology, philology, anthropology, archaeology, and medicine. The reading and analysis of primary sources is a central feature of the course.
The course consists of lectures and seminars; it is examined by way of written assignments and by active participation in the seminars. The language of instruction is English. We welcome applicants from the historical disciplines and beyond, including the medical and biological sciences.
