Timbro vet faktiskt inte om skolbibliotek är bra

Ur debattartikel i Expressen Satsningar på skolan ska inte drivas av känslor utan av beprövade metoder med vetenskaplig evidens. Annars riskerar resurser fördelas bort från verksamheter som ger nytta till de vars företrädare skriker högst. Om målet är att förbättra läsförståelsen bland svenska barn är det inte på något vis klarlagt att tvång om bemannade bibliotek alls fungerar, och det är definitivt inte klarlagt att det är den bästa användningen av skolans begränsade resurser. Eftersom försämringen i läsförståelse framför allt drivs av elever med annat modersmål än svenska bör åtminstone satsningar på svenska som andraspråk diskuteras. Forskning har visat på behovet av individuella insatser för att öka läsförmågan hos barn i den gruppen. Utan ett bättre kunskapsläge bör regeringen vara försiktig med vilka satsningar som görs på svensk skola. Resurser måste fördelas dit de gör störst nytta för barnens lärande. Excessive use of words like ‘commendable’ and ‘meticulous’ suggests ChatGPT has been used in thousands of scientific studies

A librarian, Andrew Gray from University College, London has analyzed millions of articles in search of uncommon terms abused by artificial intelligence programs klipp Andrew Gray estimates that at least 60,000 scientific studies (more than 1% of those analyzed in 2023) were written with the help of ChatGPT — a tool launched at the end of 2022 — or similar. “I think extreme cases of someone writing an entire study with ChatGPT are rare,” says Gray, a 41-year-old Scottish librarian. In his opinion, in most cases artificial intelligence is used appropriately to “polish” the text — identify typos or facilitate translation into English — but there is a large gray area, in which some scientists take the assistance of ChatGPT even further, without verifying the results. “Right now it is impossible to know how big this gray area is, because scientific journals do not require authors to declare the use of ChatGPT, there is very little transparency,” he laments. klipp Gray’s analysis shows that the word “intricate” appeared in 109,000 studies in 2023, more than double the average of 50,000 in previous years. They eliminate long-established exemptions from prosecution for librarians — sometimes teachers and museum employees, too — over obscene material. Almost every state adopted such carve-outs decades ago to ensure schools, museums and libraries could offer accurate information about topics such as sex education. Removing the exemption means librarians, teachers and museum staffers could face years of imprisonment or tens of thousands in fines for giving out books deemed sexually explicit, obscene or “harmful” to minors. Criminal group exchanged historical editions with sophisticated copies, causing EUR 2 500 000 in damages

Ur pressmeddelande från Europol In 2022 and 2023, the criminal group managed to steal rare books from national and historical libraries in Czechia, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Switzerland. The thieves would target rare books by mainly Russian writers, such as first editions authored by the likes of Alexander Pushkin or Nikolai Gogol. When visiting libraries, the thieves would request to check the antique books in person, feigning a specific such as academic interest. On this occasion, they would meticulously measure the books and take photographs before handing them back. Several days, weeks, or months later, the perpetrators would return and ask to access the same books, this time returning counterfeit versions.
