New Directions in Environmental History: Temporalities, Economies, and Technologies

Course description
In this course, we will consider the role of environmental history in the writing of contemporary history, with emphasis on how environments are configured and understood in relation to broader temporal frameworks, economic and financial incentives and technological developments. The course aims to explore new directions in environmental history and focus especially on how environmental historians can engage with theory of history, business history, history of capitalism, intellectual history and history of science and technology. In recent years, environmental history has scrutinized its own conceptual and intellectual foundations and, in light of the rise of the Anthropocene concept, paid increased attention to the relevant temporal and spatial scales of inquiry shaping the discipline. How can new environmental histories be written in the 2020s?
Academic aim
- Critically reflect on the role of history in the Anthropocene.
- Understanding and integrating one or several of the following concepts: temporality, technology, and economy
- Being able to read and discuss works-in-progress in a generative way
Target group
We welcome applications from PhD candidates working in environmental history and other historical subdisciplines, as well as STS, political ecology, environmental humanities, anthropology, gender studies or other related disciplines

PRESSMEDDELANDE OCH INBJUDAN TILL PRISUTDELNING
Svenska nationalkommittén för teknik- och vetenskapshistorias pris till Torsten Althins minne för 2025 tilldelas Solveig Jülich och Malin Thomas Nilsson för boken Embryologiska rum: Tornbladsinstitutets samling av foster från människa och djur.
Nyinstiftade Svenska nationalkommittén för teknik- och vetenskapshistorias pris till Torsten Althins minnesyftar till att uppmärksamma det teknik- och vetenskapshistoriska kunskapsområdets institutionella och tematiska bredd. Därtill ska det stärka och motivera den mångfald av institutioner som arbetar med teknik- och vetenskapshistoriska frågor. Priset belönar personer, arbeten eller institutioner som på ett förtjänstfullt sätt verkat för att bevara, sprida eller skapa ny kunskap om teknikens och vetenskapens historia och kulturarv i Sverige, till exempel inom forskning, museer, populärvetenskap, undervisning, arkiv och kulturmiljövård. Bakom priset står Svenska nationalkommittén för teknik- och vetenskapshistoria och Tekniska Museets Vänner.
År 2025 tilldelas priset Solveig Jülich och Malin Thomas Nilsson för boken Embryologiska rum: Tornbladsinstitutets samling av foster från människa och djur. Embryologiska rum är en nydanande bok som skickligt kombinerar text och bild, konst och forskning samt publikt och akademiskt anslag. Boken är vacker och berörande samtidigt som den öppnar nya perspektiv på den medicinska kunskapens historia och ställer viktiga frågor om dess omdiskuterade kulturarv i Sverige. Solveig Jülich är professor i idéhistoria vid Uppsala universitet. Malin Thomas Nilsson är verksam som konstnär, fotograf och formgivare i Malmö.
Prisutdelningen kommer att äga rum i Eventsalen på Tekniska museet i Stockholm torsdagen den 16 oktober 2025 med start 17:00.

Här är några nyheter som rör den idéhistoriska tidskriften Lychnos.
Sedan en tid tillbaka har vi gått över till kontinuerlig digital publicering av de artiklar som hör till tidskriftens så kallade ”öppna” del, alltså den delen som ligger före temasektionen (special issue). Vi är glada över att kunna meddela att den första artikeln nu publicerats ”ahead of print”, nämligen Cecilia Rivings artikel ”Hypnotismens apostel. Den andra glada nyheten är att VR har beviljat Lychnos tidskriftsstöd i ytterligare tre år. Det innebär att det kommer finnas ekonomiska förutsättningar att utveckla det redaktionella arbetet i framtiden och att fortsätta publicera Lychnos i både digital och tryckt form.
Slutligen vill vi också påminna om att deadline för att skicka in abstracts till nästa nummers temasektion är den 17 november. Temat är ”Transformations of Popular Science” och CfP ligger på tidskriftens hemsida (samt finns inklistrat här nedan). För den öppna delen saknas deadline, eftersom artiklarna där hanteras och publiceras kontinuerligt.

Transformations of Popular Science
Special issue editors: Jonatan Samuelsson and Jenny Eklöf
In this special issue we invite researchers within areas such as history of science and ideas, history of knowledge, media history, science communication and STS, to contribute to the thematic section of next year’s volume of Lychnos: Annual of the Swedish History of Science Society. The theme – Transformations of Popular Science – tries to capture the many ways in which the role of science in society has been intrinsically tied to questions about popularisation – or more broadly – the public mediation of scientific knowledge, practices, and values.
Popular science is still often conceived of, practiced, and valued in terms of (appropriate) simplification and dissemination. There is, however, a lot more to it, as recent scholarship has reframed the discussion on popularisation to encompass perspectives from other academic fields such as history of science, media and communication studies, cultural studies, and STS. The circulation, mediation and overall public discourse on science, technology and research has consequently begun to be understood in relation to other cultural meaning-making processes, intersecting with questions of democracy, citizenship, consumption, identity, and so forth. Departing from these baseline assumptions, this special issue aims to explore science popularisation, communication, deliberation, and mediation in historical context over the past century (give or take).
We encourage specifically (but not exclusively) contributions that:
* Investigate how the genre and practice of popular science have changed and varied over time in relation to broader transformations of the media and research landscapes in the 20th century and onwards.
* Explore the underlying ideological, conceptual and value-based assumptions that have been guiding popularisation activities in the past, as well as research about popular science. Empirical as well as theoretical and historiographical contributions are welcome.
* Specifically highlight the role of popularisation for all disciplines and research areas, including the humanities and social sciences.
* Take seriously the digital transformation of society and how it has altered conditions for popularisation overall.
* Problematise terms like “popularisation” and “popular science” and their relation to other concepts and practices, like mediated science, expository science, science journalism, knowledge circulation, science fiction, etc.
This special issue focuses on Sweden and the Nordic region in particular, but contributions investigating the history of popular science in other parts of the world are also welcome. Lychnos publishes articles in in Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and English.
The following types of contributions will be considered:

* Historiographical reflections (max 5000 words)

1 December 2023: Confirmation of acceptance of abstracts.

Historielärarnas förenings årsskrift (HLFÅ) utkommer årligen sedan föreningen grundades 1942. Med sin innehållsmässiga bredd, debattmässiga aktualitet och omfattande recensionsavdelning är det en viktig publikation för svensk historisk och historiedidaktisk forskning. Årsskriften är numera även EBSCO-ansluten (den publiceras digitalt och är tillgänglig via universitetsbiblioteken).
Historielärarnas förenings årsskrift välkomnar både vetenskapliga och populärvetenskapliga artiklar av hög kvalitet. Målet är att nå ut med de nyaste rönen inom svensk historisk och historiedidaktisk forskning med relevans för historielärare. Vi ser gärna fler artiklar från idéhistoriker. Ett abstract om maximalt 200 ord skickas till redaktörer Emma Severinsson (emma.severinsson(a)kultur.lu.se) som tillsammans med Julia Håkansson är redaktör för årsskriften, senast den 15 september. I abstractet ska anges om artikeln är populärvetenskaplig eller ämnad för peer-review.
Redaktionen tar emot artikelförslag löpande, men för att komma i fråga för publicering i årsboken 2026 behöver vi ha mottagit ett abstract senast den 15 september 2025.

Cognition and Evolution in Historical and Social Research

Over recent decades, cognitive science have significantly reshaped our understanding of human thought, while modern evolutionary theory has provided robust explanations of the biological origin of Homo sapiens. Yet, despite these transformative developments, cognitive and evolutionary perspectives remain under-integrated within mainstream historical and social research. This conference seeks to address this lacuna by exploring how cognitive and evolutionary approaches can enrich our understanding of the human condition in historical and societal contexts.
Recent advances in cognitive science, neuroscience, and genetics compel historians and social scientists to re-evaluate foundational paradigms. Concepts such as the embodied mind, situated and distributed cognition, and conceptual metaphor theory are increasingly applied within the humanities and social sciences, particularly in fields such as linguistics, literary studies, archaeology, and religious studies. Concurrently, emerging research in cultural evolution and cognitive theory has fostered a biologically and culturally grounded view of humans as products of long-standing bio-cultural co-evolutionary processes.
Evolutionary frameworks have gained traction in newly established interdisciplinary domains, including evolutionary cultural studies, evolutionary institutional economics, evolutionary linguistics, and cognitive evolution studies. These perspectives prompt historians and social scientists to re-examine core models and analogies—such as those comparing cultural and organismic evolution—and to investigate the roles of variation, selection, and inheritance (retention) within cultural dynamics.
At the heart of these inquiries lies a key question: how do cognitive processes—perception, memory, conceptualisation, embodied action, communicative practices, and institutional forms—function as mental constructs that contribute to social inertia or transformation? This conference invites scholarly contributions that explore these mechanisms and their implications for historical change and long-term social evolution.
The conference will take place at Lund University, Sweden. The nearest international airport is Copenhagen Airport (Denmark), with direct rail connections to Lund Central Station (approximately 35 minutes).
There is no conference fee. Participants are expected to arrange their own travel and accommodation. The event is sponsored by Royal Physiographic Society of Lund.

Efter fjolårets succé i Uppsala bjuder föreningen Mediehistoriskt Arkiv åter in till symposium, denna gång med temat ” Från lilla till stora mediehistorien”. Temat är tänkt att uppmuntra till presentationer som vågar öka den mediehistoriska förklaringspotentialen bortom de enskilda fallstudierna; Hur går man som forskare från det lilla till det stora? Vilka forskningsfält kan mediehistoria dra nytta av för att skala upp och åstadkomma mer generella slutsatser? Finns det något kvalitativt nytt som uppstår i skärningspunkten mellan exempelvis medie- och kommunikationsvetenskap och historievetenskap?
Temat är inte tvingande – mediehistoriska studier av alla de slag välkomnas.
