Dear all,
And thank you to all of you who came to Malmö and made it such an interesting and fun two days! I heard from several people that the vibes were so good - love that!
Below I include notes from the network meeting which we held on the last day which concern among other things publication plans and other plans for the future.
I will soon also send out invitations for the mentioned meetings!
Please let me know if you have any suggestions for network activities or questions, and I hope to see you on Zoom!
Kiin
Notes from Network meeting with LGBTQ+-H-L network
Malmö Nov 25th, 2025
Information
We started off with some good news about research funding for network members Ylva Moberg, Charlotta Carlström and Michael Nebeling Petersen! Congratulations!
Next, Jukka Lehtonen told us a little bit about a two-day conference Enhancing Nordic collaboration on public data gathering on LGBTI+ people in Nordic countries, that the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) och Nordic Council of Ministers arranged during the fall. There will be a report published eventually and Jukka will send it out on the email list.
Email list
We discussed using the email list more actively to share new publications, conferences and calls – Kiin will send out a reminder about this and an invitation to share recent publications!
If we manage to use it more we can consider making a basic newsletter to gather information, but right now we don’t need that.
Publications
There is currently work being done to initiate an edited book on LGBTQ+ youth and professionals related to school environments of different kinds – contact Lee Hildebrand and Jack Lukkerz if you want more information about this: lee.a.hildebrand(a)gmail.com<mailto:lee.a.hildebrand@gmail.com>; jack.lukkerz(a)mau.se<mailto:jack.lukkerz@mau.se>
Considering the theme of this network meeting it might be interesting for one of us to guest edit a Special Collection for International Journal of Qualitative Methods, there is a call on that out.
Ella Ben Hagai highlighted that the Journal of Lesbian Studies was interested in a special issue on Nordic queer culture in some way. Kiin Catrine Andersson and Amanda Klysing will work on a proposal for a call and see where that takes us.
Róisín Ryan Flood is editor for Sexualities and that they are always interested in suggestions for special issues.
Thomas Wimark also mentioned that the journal of Gender, Place & Culture were interested in manuscripts using quantitative methods, relating to place in some way – very broadly.
Plans for the spring
We agreed that we want to continue with the joint writing time via Zoom and Kiin will send out invitations for this.
We also wanted to do a seminar on applications in January where we read each others applications and give suggestions. Kiin will coordinate this and send out an invite.
Plans for next network meeting
Next network meeting will be at Tampere University, Finland! Joa Hiitola will be the local contact person for this, and arrange it together with the coordination group. If you want to participate in the coordination group (we are mostly Swedes right now and others are very welcome) you can email Kiin.
One possible theme we discussed was Public engagement, but in order to include NGOs and professionals we would need to do a bigger conference format with a public call. We will look into applying for funding and possibly doing this in 2027.
The theme for the network meeting 2026 will be very broad: Creating new spaces – for collaborations, new studies, theoretical development and public engagement, which we hope will be good basis for developing a conference for the year after.
We will include space at the network meeting to discuss disciplinary issues and institutional challenges as this was something we all struggled with.
More information on the network meeting will follow.

Call for abstracts: ‘Social justice and the crisis of LGBTQI+ young people’s mental health’ (ESHMS Conference, Hamburg, August 2026)
21st Biennial European Society of Health and Medical Sociology Conference: “Mental Health in Times of Uncertainty”
19th August – 21st August 2026, Hamburg, Germany; www.uke.de/eshms2026<http://www.uke.de/eshms2026>
Submission deadline February 15th, 2026
Session convenors:
Professor Elizabeth McDermott, School of Social Policy, University of Birmingham, UK e.mcdermott.1(a)bham.ac.uk<mailto:e.mcdermott.1@bham.ac.uk> and Dr Eleanor Wilkinson, School of Geography & Planning, University of Sheffield, UK eleanor.wilkinson(a)sheffield.ac.uk<mailto:eleanor.wilkinson@sheffield.ac.uk>
Young LGBTQI+ people across Europe are growing up in a period of instability and crisis, shaped by a series of intersecting threats: from the backlash against LGBTQI+ rights, populist ‘gender wars’, rising racism and xenophobia, and widespread online queerphobic violence. This session seeks to build interdisciplinary dialogue around LGBTQI+ youth mental health in times of uncertainty and violence, asking how we can better understand the impact that these intersecting crises are having on the mental health of LGBTQI+ youth, and what can be done to promote LGBTQI+ young people’s mental wellbeing, resilience and futures?
We are particularly keen to hear from those seeking to move beyond dominant biomedical psychiatric (diagnostic) and psychological (‘minority stress’) frameworks that pathologize LGBTQI+ youth as vulnerable ‘at risk’ subjects. We want instead to think sociologically about the social, economic, cultural, environmental and political conditions that shape LGBTQI+ young people’s mental health. We argue that to address the elevated rates of LGBTQI+ youth poor mental health, we must adopt a youth-rights, social justice approach to mental health that can promote social connection, resilience and collective resistance in times of profound uncertainty.
We invite potential contributors to think about the following questions and other relevant topics. Contributions can be empirical, methodological, theoretical:
• How might anti-LGBTQI+ political sentiments across Europe limit our capacity to research the lives and mental health of LGBTQI+ youth?
• How might the state disinvestment in LGBTQI+ equality initiatives impact our capacity for prevention and intervention?
• What forms of LGBTQI+ youth mental health support are already taking place beyond the state through networks of care, friendship and solidarity?
• How can we collaborate with multiple minoritised queer youth to generate possibilities to resist pathologization and create queer joy and mental wellness?
• Why might we want to think of LGBTQI+ youth mental health beyond dominant framings of ‘positive feeling’ and ‘resilience’, why might we want to hold space for ‘bad feelings’, pessimism, and retreat?
• How do our understandings of a social justice approach to queer youth mental health work intersectionally, especially around addressing ableism, racism and white privilege in mental health support services for LGBTQI+ youth.
• What are the potentials of de-pathologised mental health support for queer and trans youth?
• What are the ethics of researching LGBTQI+ youth mental health at times of crisis and uncertainty?
• What are the politics of queer youth co-production in mental health research?
• How can we conduct research around LGBTQI+ youth mental health with care? (addressing questions of extraction, exhaustion, and failed promises).

Dear all,
We have now finalized a programme for the Network Meeting in November. It will take place in Malmö on the 24-25th of November. It is a joint meeting with the Nordic research network Queen (QUeer rEfugees rEsearch Network). I will coordinate together with Thomas Wimark, who is one of the coordinators of the QUEEN network (and also a member of the LGBTQ+ network!).
Attached you find the programme. We will have two keynotes:
Roisin Ryan-Flood is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Centre for Intimate and Sexual Citizenship (CISC) at the University of Essex. She has a longstanding interest in feminist epistemology and methodology, as seen in for example Silence and Secrecy in the Research Process: Feminist Reflections (2010) and Queering Methodology: Lessons and Dilemmas from Lesbian Lives (2022).
Jenny Gunnarsson Payne is Professor of Ethnology at Södertörn University. Her research investigates cultural, social and political aspects of gender, sexuality, reproduction and kinship. She has published widely on issues of queer kinship, assisted reproduction and anti-gender politics. She currently leads the project "Navigating anti-LGBTQ-politics and homonationalism" on LGBTQ-migration from Russia and East Africa to Sweden.
We are very happy to welcome them, and are looking forward to discussions with you all. This time, we will have paper presentations and several different sessions to choose from as suggested by some of you. However, please feel welcome to join even if you are not presenting!
It is possible to apply for travel and accommodation stipend if you are (or become) part of the LGBTQ+-H-L network. Please note that the deadline for this application is October 12. You apply by filling out the registration form:
https://forms.office.com/e/UvjPzXLxWW
Deadline for registration (without application for stipend) is November 3, use the same link. The network meeting is free of charge.
I hope to see many of you in Malmö!
Best,
Catrine
