Det europeiska nätverket för arbetarhistoria, ELHN, håller i år sin femte konferens på Ekonomikum i Uppsala. Konferenserna är organiserade av arbetsgrupper som alla ansvarar för innehåll och upplägg i sina delar. I år ser vi 230 anmälda deltagare, med en bred spridning på områden.
Även om möjligheterna för att anmäla paneler eller enskilda presentationer sedan länge är stängd, går det fortfarande bra att registrera sig som åhörare.

The European Labour History Network, ELHN, is holding its fifth conference this year at Ekonomikum in Uppsala. The conferences are organised by working groups, each of which is responsible for the content and structure of its part. This year we see 230 registered participants, from Europe and other parts of the world, with a wide spread of areas.
Although registration for panels or individual presentations is now closed, it is still possible to register as an audience member.

On behalf of the ICHS/CISH Board, we would like to inform all members that we have been following the evolving situation in the Middle East with particular attention and concern since October 7, 2023. In light of the ongoing escalation, we have agreed that there are no conditions to prepare for the 2026 Congress in Jerusalem. The Board, in agreement with the Historical Society of Israel, decided to postpone the ICHS/CISH Congress until 2028 and to hold a Congress dedicated to the centenary of ICHS/CISH in 2026. At the General Assembly in Tokyo on October 25, 2024, all members will discuss how and where to hold the Centennial Congress.
The General Assembly will take place at the Kasumigaseki Campus (Small Campus), Teikyo University, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, October 25, 2024, from 9 am to 5pm.

With immigration dominating the US presidential election today, historians are reconsidering the importance of the 1924 Immigration Act in US law and politics. Join historian Erika Lee (Harvard University and the University of Cambridge) as she offers some insight into the deep-rooted history of xenophobia in the US and what is at stake as Americans head to the polls in November.

Call for papers
Workshop vid Åbo Akademi 14–15.11.2024
Vi bjuder in till en workshop om förvisningar i Norden och Östersjöområdet under förmodern tid. I våra dagars Norden är temat tyvärr aktuellt. I det förflutna kunde förvisning innefatta många olika slags åtgärder – såsom avvisning, utvisning, utväxling, deportationer och andra tvångsförflyttningar eller order att försvinna. Både enskilda och grupper förvisades från städer och län samt från olika delar av konglomeratstater och imperier. Under tidigmodern tid var förvisning också ett straff som utdömdes lokalt för stöld, sedlighetsbrott eller lösdriveri. Detta kunde även utgöra en form av tvångsemigration som anknöt till kolonisation.
Förvisning har i förhållandevis liten omfattning belysts i forskning om det förmoderna Norden. Som värdar för denna workshop står forskarna i två sammanlänkade projekt vid Åbo Akademi: ”Waves of banishments? Regulations and practices of expulsion in Northern Europe 1450–1900” (FA 2021) och ”’Packa sin kos’ – studier om förvisade och utvisningsdomar under fyra sekel” (SKF 2021). I fallstudier granskar vi både orts- och landsförvisningar, förfaranden som skedde lokalt, regionalt och överstatligt i det svenska riket och dess östra del, som 1809 blev ett storfurstendöme inom det ryska imperiet. Dessutom beaktas förändringar av och ambivalens i reglering. Vi uppmärksammar främst förvisningar som drabbade personer i lägre sociala skikt och minoriteter av olika slag.
Till workshoppen vill vi samla forskare som utifrån olika perspektiv utforskar denna mångfasetterade tematik. Vi välkomnar presentationer som knyter an till den problematik som vi arbetar med och som berör olika delar av Norden och Östersjöområdet. Det normativa materialet – lagarna, förordningarna och stadsprivilegierna – innehöll stipuleringar om förvisning, men till den förmoderna statens natur hörde också att det fanns stort utrymme för lokala sedvänjor. Därför är regionala jämförelser viktiga vid sidan av de tidsmässiga.
Vi söker huvudsakligen bidrag som berör tillämpningar av föreliggande reglering:
När och i vilken omfattning förvisades människor? På vilka grunder?
Var utvisningarna speciellt frekventa under vissa perioder?
Vilka var de människor och instanser som hade makt att utvisa människor ur stater eller förpassa dem ut ur städer och län?
När de tillgängliga källorna tillåter, sätts de utvisade i fokus: Hur agerade de personer som riskerade förvisning? Kan vi veta något om de utvisades egna åtgärder och deras fortsatta livsöden?
Anmäl ditt intresse för presentation av ett paper senast den 31 maj 2024: sänd e-post till Kasper Kepsu (kasper.kepsu(a)abo.fi) med förslag på titel, en kort abstract (ca 200 ord) och en kortfattad CV.
Bekräftelse på medverkan ges före den 20 juni 2024. Kost och logi i Åbo erbjuds och vi ersätter även resekostnader.
Deltagarna ombes att sända in ett kortare paper (8–10 sidor) senast den 30 oktober 2024. Under vår workshop i Åbo den 14–15 november kan bidragen presenteras på svenska, danska, norska eller engelska. Svenska är det huvudsakliga språket och deltagande förutsätter förståelse av skandinaviska språk. Vår avsikt är att utforma en antologi kring tematiken.

Föreningen Mediehistoriskt arkiv bjuder in till mediehistoriskt symposium i Uppsala den 24–25 oktober 2024. Symposiet arrangeras i samarbete med Institutionen för idéhistoria och Centrum för digital humaniora och samhällsvetenskap, Uppsala universitet.
Temat för symposiet är Digitaliseringens svarta svanar. Upptäckten av svarta svanar vid européernas ankomst till Australien i slutet av 1600-talet har kommit att användas som en metafor för händelser som tidigare ansetts omöjliga att förutse men som i tillbakablick framstår som oundvikliga. Med inspiration i denna metafor inbjuder vi till presentationer och diskussioner som rör aktuella relationer mellan mediehistoria och digitalisering. Vad för slags nya perspektiv på mediehistoria och mediehistorisk forskning har digitaliseringen medfört? Vilka övergripande erfarenheter och problem kan urskiljas i mediehistoriska digitaliseringsprojekt? Vad är det vi inte vet att vi vet om den digitala utvecklingen och vilken roll spelar mediehistoria för att förstå denna?
Även presentationer kring andra tematiker och frågor med relevans för mediehistorisk forskning i vid bemärkelse är välkomna.

“Affinity: The Subversive Potential of Ephemeral Solidarities in Early Twentieth-Century Los Angeles”

Abstract
Los Angeles was a global hub of anarchism and interracial labor organizing in the early twentieth century. This talk will explore the potential for the concept of affinity to bind together disparate narratives of short-lived labor organizations and job actions through a deep reading of the early 20th century anarchist print culture and other archival traces. Los Angeles had a very small industrial sector before 1920; the regional agricultural economy was far more advanced in terms of scale and corporate organization. This shaped migratory labor patterns typified by urban-rural and rural-rural movement where itinerate workers migrated between seasonal agriculture jobs and short-term infrastructure work—such as laying railroad tracks and gas pipelines, building roads and digging aqueducts—and then back to spend the winter in Los Angeles. The most racially diverse solidarities developed among workers with precarious employment. These solidarities were often temporary, rarely having time to institutionalize, which reflected the migratory labor patterns of the region. The primary consideration of the talk is tracing the textual route through fleeting forms of cooperation that produced modes of experimentation that were extraordinarily successful in transgressing racial, class, and gender hierarchies.
Short bio
David Struthers received his PhD in history from Carnegie Mellon University and is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Management, Society, and Communication at the Copenhagen Business School. His first monograph The World in a City: Multiethnic Radicalism in Early Twentieth-Century Los Angeles (University of Illinois Press, 2019), received the Shelley Fisher Fishkin Prize for International Scholarship in Transnational American Studies from the American Studies Association. His (with Peter Cole and Kenyon Zimmer) edited volume Wobblies of the World: A Global History of the IWW (Pluto Press, 2017) has been translated into French (Hors d'atteinte, 2021). His current work focuses on short-term solidarities and the history of radical media.

Seminariet arrangeras i samband med överlämningen av Rudolf Meidner-priset till 2023 års pristagare Jonas Söderqvist, ekonomhistoriker som disputerade vid Uppsala universitet och idag verksam vid Arbetarrörelsen arkiv och bibliotek, för hans avhandling Social rörlighet i en socialt rörig tid: Eleverna och deras utbildning vid Brunnsvik, Väddö och Hola folkhögskolor, 1906-1921, Uppsala 2023.
Pristagaren utses av Arbetarrörelsens arkiv och biblioteks forskningsråd sedan 1995: priset instiftades 1994 i samband med forskningsrådets första ordförande Rudolf Meidners 80 årsdag och kommer att överlämnas av Therese Guovelin, LOs förste vice ordförande.
Jonas Söderqvist inleder kvällen med ett föredrag om utbildningens betydelse för elevernas yrkes- och karriärvägar. Folkbildningen var viktig för att utjämna bristande tillgång till högre utbildning som merparten av den svenska befolkningen upplevde i början på 1900-talet. Idag är folkbildningen allvarligt hotad av ekonomiska nedskärningar. Det som en gång i tiden ansågs vara en viktig källa till bildning för alla och samfinansierades med staten är i dag ifrågasatt.
I en anslutande paneldiskussion diskuterar företrädare för folkbildningen i Sverige, tillsammans med pristagaren, utmaningar, behov och möjligheter för dagens folkbildning.
I panelen deltar Marianne Garnelis, lärare Runö Folkhögskola & Utvecklingscentrum, Jenny Jansson, statsvetare Uppsala universitet, Calle Nathanson, studieombudsman ABF Stockholm och Sverker Sörlin, idéhistoriker KTH. Samtalet leds av Silke Neunsinger, forskningsledare Arbetarrörelsen arkiv och bibliotek.
Seminariet är ett samarrangemang mellan Arbetarrörelsens arkiv och bibliotek, AKS och ABF Stockholm.

You are hereby invited to submit to a symposium on the circulation and reprinting of texts and images in the periodical press with the aim of producing an open-access edited volume by an esteemed publisher. We the organisers/editors form the ongoing research project ‘Information highways of the 19th century: The public sphere as newspaper infrastructure and shared content’, focusing on Swedish-language newspapers and working with both digital methods and close reading. Submissions may encompass periodicals from any nation and any time period. We seek submissions contributing to the historical knowledge on scissors-and-paste editing, including all types of content and interrelations with other media forms, using quantitative and/or qualitative methods.

Call for papers: Histories of content reuse in the periodical press
From a historical perspective, the alleged predicament of today’s digital sharing culture evokes at least two impulses: First, the need arises to address problems with history-less conceptions of the unicity of our time. Second, the transformations in the present – real or imagined – trigger the research imagination regarding relations between dissemination, accessibility, content and information technologies in the past. As it happens, digitisation also means that such new queries, as well as some old but hitherto impossible to answer, can now be explored.
We are pleased to announce a symposium aiming at an open-access edited volume focusing on issues of content reuse in the periodical press. We invite submissions providing scholars room for nuanced arguments and aim for a volume that will showcase state-of-the-art historical research. Contributions may encompass periodicals from any nation(s) and any time period(s). They can engage in anything from local editorial principles and reading practices to overall systemic or infrastructural aspects – as well as in how these levels were interrelated and changed over time. They can concentrate on verbatim reprints or more creative forms of reuse. They can focus on newspapers or journals exclusively or on their relations with other media forms. And they can indeed include illustrations and other non-textual media. We seek submissions that contribute to the historical knowledge on these issues, using quantitative and/or qualitative methods.
Topics of contributions can include but are not limited to:
* empirical studies exploring historical questions on, e.g, content flows and circulation in time and space; adaptations and recontextualisation; the role of individual agents in the larger networks;
* empirical studies demonstrating the possibilities of close reading and/or digital methods (e.g., overcoming subjective sampling, expanding temporal scope or making systematic cross-national comparisons).
Submission guidelines
* Abstracts should be approximately 500 words, describing the proposed paper’s focus, methodology and relevance to the volume’s theme.
* Include a brief bio with your submission.
* Submissions should be sent to patrik.lundell(a)oru.se by 1 April 2024.
* Notification of decisions by 31 April.
Tentative timeline: Chapter drafts (6,000–11,000 words) by mid-January 2025. Symposium in Lund, Sweden, early February 2025. Full chapters by early May 2025. Comments from the editors in June 2025. Revision period. Submission to the publisher autumn 2025.
In May this year, we will apply for funding of the symposium, and we expect to be able to subsidise the costs associated with it. Of course, the economic feasibility and environmental acceptability of on-site participation depends on the nature and scope of travels; online participation will be possible. By mid-June a more precise timeline will be communicated and first contacts with a publisher will have been made.

Vid historiska institutionen i Uppsala drivs sedan ett flertal år tillbaka det omfattande forsknings- och digitaliseringsprojektet Gender and Work (GaW) med det övergripande syftet att öka kunskapen om mäns och kvinnors arbete i äldre tid.
Nu lanserar GaW en betaversion av sin databas nya sök- och uttagsverktyg samtidigt som en mängd nya data från perioden 1720-1880 görs tillgängliga för alla intresserade. I databasen kan du söka bland 40 000 registrerade försörjningsaktiviteter utförda mellan 1550 och 1880 och fritextsöka bland 7 000 källtexter från bland annat domböcker, dagböcker och suppliker.
Det tillgängliggjorda materialet består både av de data som vår bok Making a Living, Making a Difference: Gender and Work in Early Modern European Society (2017) baserade sig på, och de data som ligger till grund för vår kommande bok Gender, Work, and the Transition to Modernity in Northwestern Europe, 1720-1880.

SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS: “MANORS AT WAR”, MANORIAL RESEARCH CONFERENCE 2024 KAMU Espoo City Museum has the pleasure of inviting you to the 8:th ENCOUNTER conference taking place on June 13th – 15th 2024 in Espoo, Finland.
The conference is held in conjunction with the research project of the KAMU Espoo City Museum: The Espoo Manor, which focuses on the Espoo Manor and its long and rich history. The results of the project are presented in an exhibition presenting the history of the Manor of Espoo and in a scholarly work titled: The Espoo Manor – The Manor on the King’s Road, both published in October 2023. The manor at war The Espoo Manor was founded by King Gustaf I of Sweden in 1556 as part of a network of royal demesnes designed to support the logistics of the Swedish army during the war with Russia 1554– 1557. Manors have historically played an important role during the many periods of conflict across Europe – as strongholds, supply depots, prisons, training centres, headquarters, and hospitals for example. During periods of occupation manors have usually fared badly at the hands of the invading army, and even sometimes at the hands of their own troops. Some manors, on the other hand, owe their existence to the riches their owners acquired in wartime. Manors also had a complicated role to play in both the build up to and the aftermath of wars – as symbols of resistance or occupation, as well as symbols of regeneration or a new political order. The theme of manors in times of war is regrettably current in Europe even today.
Call for papers Participants are invited to send proposals for presentations, which may approach the theme of the seminar, manors, and wars, broadly during the modern period (from about 1500 CE to the present), from different perspectives and addressing questions such as e.g.:
• How have manors been shaped by wartime?
• How did manors operate as economic and logistical centres during wartime?
• What is the history of women within manors and estates caught up in wars?
• When and why were manors rebuilt after periods of destruction during war?
• How did wartime affect the labour forces that manors depended on and what impact did this have?
• What stories emerge from manors in the aftermath of war – as remnants of lost communities, as symbols or resistance or occupation, or as legacies of a changed world?
• Manors and estates during and after the world wars.
• The mission of museums in their presentation of wars. How do museums deal with the dark heritage of war?
Research, preservation, protection and public communication of the cultural heritage of manor houses and estates and war. According to this multiscalar approach, three sessions of a maximum of four presentations will be organized. The length of the presentations is 20 minutes maximum and 10 minutes for discussion. The excellence of applications as well as the experience of the potential contributors will therefore be relevant for choosing the conference contributions.

Abstracts in English of a maximum of 300 words (references excluded) as well as a brief biographical note with your title and institutional affiliation may be sent to: susanna.aaltonen(a)espoo.fi The deadline for abstract submission is January 31st 2024. Notification of acceptance will be sent in February 2024. The language of the conference is English. The selected contributors may be exempted from the conference fee (150 Euro). Avdelningen för Agrarhistoria vid SLU kommer under vårterminen 2024 (20/3–14/6) att ge doktorandkursen Early Modern Social Inequality (7,5 hp).
The objective of this course is to give students insights into the research on inequality in Early Modern Europe in general, and Sweden in particular (c. 1500–1800): the main empirical findings, as well as the methods and the theoretical explanatory models used. The course includes the historiography of how (in-)equality rose as an intellectual concept and as an interest of research; the latest findings concerning how wealth and income inequality shifted over time and between regions; the debates regarding why and how inequality grew; and what consequences inequality had for the population of Early Modern Europe.
Kursen riktar sig till doktorander i historia, ekonomisk historia, agrarhistoria och närliggande ämnen. Den är öppen för alla sökande oavsett lärosäte, utan avgift. Undervisningen äger rum i Ultuna utanför Uppsala, men med möjlighet till hybriddeltagande på distans. NLHN online Workshop: Who is who in Nordic labour movements? Towards a biographical encyclopaedia of labour activists 28 November 14.00

Many people interested in a movement or an organisation often encounter lesser-known names in the sources. It can be difficult to get an overview of the importance of individuals for an organisation's daily work or how organisations are connected through personal networks. One way to find information about individuals is to search in biographical encyclopaedias. During periods, labour movements in the Nordic countries have published bibliographic encyclopaedias, but they are far from complete. Women are often underrepresented and often cover a shorter period of history. We have invited specialists in historical biographies to discuss how a historical encyclopaedia for the Nordic labour movement could be designed based on experiences from similar projects.

Tisdagen den 28 november kl. 13.15-15 hålls en öppen föreläsning och diskussion på temat historieförfalskning, historieförvanskning och forskarens roll.
Inbjuden föreläsare är Ida Östenberg, professor i Antikens kultur och samhällsliv vid Göteborgs universitet. Rubriken för föreläsningen är "Män som förklarar romarriket för mig". Östenberg har gjort sig känd som en orädd fiende till historieförfalskning på sociala medier. Hon kommer att tala om bakgrunden till vårens twitterdebatt (se skärmdump nedan) - och om universitetens ansvar i en digital offentlighet.
Föreläsningen arrangeras inom ramen för Seminariet om historieförfalskning, historieförvanskning och forskarens roll som anordnas av forskningsmiljöerna REMESO och Historiska studier vid LiU, och leds av Ola Larsmo, Gästprofessor vid LiU i Moa Martinsons namn.

Kära kollegor,
planen är att nästa Världshistorikerkongress ska gå av stapeln i Jerusalem i juli 2026. Det känns i flera avseenden avlägset och situationen i området är kaotisk men här kommer ändå en uppmaning om att lämna in förslag på teman, sessioner och rundabordssamtal.
Förslagen ska skickas in via en av medlemsorganisationerna i International Committee of the Historical Sciences (ICSH/CISH), det vill säga för svensk del i första hand Svenska Historiska Föreningen. För att förslagen ska hinna behandlas av föreningens styrelse måste dessa vara undertecknad tillhanda senast torsdagen 15 december. Tiden är alltså knapp, endast en dryg månad.
Om ni är intresserade av att föreslå en panel eller session eller har frågor, kontakta gärna Stefan Amirell, som är Sveriges delegat till ICSH, så snart som möjligt för att diskutera förslaget och möjligheter till samordning.
Utöver möjligheten att skicka in förslag via Svenska Historiska Föreningen finns också möjligheten att man går via någon av ICSH:s andra medlemsorganisationer (affiliated international organizations, internal committees; se vidare http://www.cish.org/index.php/en/ under fliken ”Members”).

Dear Colleagues,
A year has passed since the closure of the 23rd Congress in Poznan. It is now up to us to prepare for the 24th ICHS Congress in Jerusalem, July 26-31, 2026.
Only ICHS members (national committees, affiliated international organizations, internal commissions) are invited to send the ICHS secretariat their proposals for themes to structure the Congress program.
The format for presentations remains unchanged, in accordance with the resolutions of the General Assemblies:
- 1. major themes: sessions last a full day, and the number of presenters must not exceed twelve.
- 2 Joint sessions: these must be proposed by at least two ICHS member organizations. They take place over three hours and must not bring together more than six speakers.
- 3. Specialized themes: these half day sessions involve six to eight speakers.
- 4. Round tables: the round table consists of a panel discussion of a substantial text, raising a major issue and drafted by the person in charge of the session. The maximum number of participants is four, excluding the organizer(s). Sessions last half day.
Proposals must therefore clearly specify whether they concern a major theme or one of the other types of session.
The themes proposed must be varied and innovative. If possible, they should put several regions of the world into perspective, and for the major themes in particular, they should cover all chronological periods. Care should be taken to balance genders and generations in the choice of speakers.
Organizers are asked to write a short presentation on the theme of the session (5,000 characters in Word format). They should fill in the form below with their contact details. Please note that the working languages are English, French and Spanish only. Organizers can already indicate the names and qualifications of the speakers.
Each member of the ICHS, through its representative, must return all proposals to the general secretariat cish.secretary.general(a)gmail.com<mailto:cish.secretary.general@gmail.com> before February 28, 2024.
The proposals selected by the committee will be posted on our website:www.cish.org<http://www.cish.org> and all ICHS members will have a short period in which to send their reactions.
Considering these reactions, the board responsible for preparing the Congress program will draw up a synthesis of the proposals. This synthesis will be submitted to the General Assembly (Tokyo, October 25-27, 2024) for discussion and vote. The major themes will be chosen separately by the General Assembly from the list of proposals.
We remind you that the board is authorized to propose panel pairings directly to the organizers in the event of similar themes. It is the responsibility of ICHS members to keep the organizers informed of developments in the procedure. The organizers will inform those whose proposals have been rejected. Please refer to the program for the 23rd Poznan Congress.
Once the General Meeting has voted, the selected organizers will be responsible for setting up their session and recruiting their speakers. Details will be sent out by the ICHS Board at the end of 2024. The board may issue a second call for contributions to solicit new themes or complete certain sessions.

Une année s'est écoulée depuis la clôture du XXIIIème congrès de Poznan. Il nous appartient maintenant de préparer le XXIVème congrès du CISH prévu à Jérusalem du 26 au 31 juillet 2026.
Seuls les membres du CISH (comités nationaux, organisations internationales affiliées, commissions internes) sont invités à faire parvenir au secrétariat du CISH leurs propositions de thèmes destinés à structurer le programme du Congrès.
Le format des interventions reste inchangé, conformément aux résolutions des Assemblées générales :
- 1. Thèmes majeurs: les séances durent toute une journée et le nombre de communicants ne doit pas dépasser douze personnes.
- 2. Sessions conjointes: elles doivent être proposées par au moins deux organismes membres du CISH. Elles se déroulent sur trois heures et ne doivent pas rassembler plus de six intervenants.
- 3. Thèmes spécialisés: ils réunissent entre six et huit intervenants et durent une demi-journée.
- 4. Tables rondes: la table-ronde consiste en une discussion en séance d’un texte substantiel, soulevant une problématique majeure et rédigé par le responsable de la séance. Le nombre des participants ne doit pas dépasser quatre, organisateur (s) non compris. Les séances durent une demi-journée.
Les propositions doivent donc bien spécifier si elles concernent un thème majeur ou un des autres types de séances.
Il est important que les thématiques proposées soient suffisamment variées et novatrices. Qu’elles mettent, si possible, plusieurs régions du monde en perspective, et que, pour les thèmes majeurs en particulier, elles englobent l’ensemble des périodes chronologiques. Il est demandé de prendre garde à l'équilibre des genres et des générations dans le choix des intervenants pressentis.
Les organisateurs doivent rédiger un texte sous forme d’une courte présentation du thème de la séance (5 000 signes sous format Word). Ils remplissent à cet effet le formulaire ci-après avec leurs coordonnées. Il est rappelé que les langues de travail sont exclusivement l’anglais, le français et l’espagnol. Les organisateurs peuvent d'ores et déjà indiquer le nom et la qualité des intervenants envisagés.
Chaque membre du CISH, par l’intermédiaire de ses responsables, doit retourner l’ensemble des propositions au secrétariat généralcish.secretary.general(a)gmail.com<mailto:cish.secretary.general@gmail.com> avant le 28 février 2024.
Les propositions retenues par le comité seront affichées sur notre site internet :www.cish.org<http://www.cish.org> et tous les membres du CISH disposeront d’une courte période pour faire parvenir leurs réactions.
Tenant compte de ces réactions, le bureau chargé de la préparation du programme du Congrès établira la synthèse des propositions. Cette synthèse sera proposée à la discussion et au vote de l’Assemblée générale (Tokyo, 25-27 octobre 2024). Les thèmes majeurs seront, eux, choisis séparément par l'Assemblée générale sur la liste des propositions.
Nous rappelons que le bureau est autorisé à proposer directement auprès des organisateurs des jumelages de panels en cas de thèmes proches. Il appartient aux membres du CISH de tenir informés les organisateurs de l’évolution de la procédure. Ces derniers ont l’obligation de prévenir les personnes dont la proposition a été refusée. À toutes fins utiles, il est conseillé de se reporter au programme du XXIIIe congrès de Poznan.
Après le vote de l’Assemblée générale, les organisateurs retenus auront la responsabilité de former leur séance et de recruter leurs intervenants. Des modalités seront envoyées par le bureau du CISH à la fin de l’année 2024. Le board lancera éventuellement un second appel à contributions afin de solliciter de nouveaux thèmes ou de compléter certaines sessions.

Abstract:
Britain in the 1840s and ‘50s witnessed the publication of a proliferation of instruction manuals on field collecting, targeted at those travelling in a range of capacities. Collecting institutions and government departments adopted this medium to direct the traveller in a manner that would best serve them in the acquisition of their respective desiderata, be that specimens, artefacts, or observations and recordings of natural phenomena. It was in this context that the British Admiralty published A Manual of Scientific Enquiry: Prepared for the Use of Officers in Her Majesty’s Navy; and Travellers in General in 1849. Edited by astronomer and polymath John Herschel, the Manual contained chapters on what were considered the major sciences of the day, each written by a leading authority in their field. The chapter on botany was written by William Jackson Hooker, director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, which had not long previously passed from royal to state ownership. This paper will examine Hooker’s chapter in detail, teasing out the significance of his stipulations for herbarium and museum specimens. It will consider these within two overlapping contexts: the Baconian empiricist thought which strongly influenced scientific practice in the first half of the 19th century; and the emergent institutionalisation of science in colonial metropoles. In doing so it will address the question: what were the affordances and limitations of instructions written by metropolitan scientists in the mid-19th century?

NLHN Roundtable: Past, Present and Future of the Nordic Labour History Journals
Since the 1970s, labour history has been very successful in the Nordic countries. Like the development in other European countries, labour history journals were started in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The content mirrors the current development and the ambitions of labour history. But what do readers want to know, what should writers know when they submit their manuscripts, and what are the editors’ ideas?
